CBS Radio and the Pinellas Green Expo have partnered to bring you a website that is 100% devoted to the issue of conserving our planet’s dwindling natural resources and in providing you with “real world” solutions and suggestions on how to live “greener” in the 21st Century.
CBS Radio has already made a significant impact as WTGB (The Globe) is the network’s first “Green” focused radio station. The Washington, D.C. station will use renewable energy to power its’ 50,000 watt signal, use hybrid vehicles in the station fleet, and devote significant air-time to helping listeners develop an eco-friendly lifestyle.
CBS Radio Tampa has made a commitment to conservation as well with the construction of this Green Pages website.
We invite you take a look around. The icons on the left will take you to pages that provide information on each subject and in many cases will link you to other websites with information for your specific situation or location.
Many of us wonderm, can we really make a difference? Isn’t this Global Warming thing too big for us to tackle? No it isn’t!
And to get you started here are 10 quick tips on how you, yes, YOU can help.
-
Get on your bike. Every mile you peddle means 1 less pound of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere.
-
Check Your Water Heater. Keep your water heater thermostat no higher than 120°F. That alone will save 550 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $30 per year.
-
Use Recycled Paper. Whenever possible use 100% post-consumer recycled paper when printing and save approximately 5 lbs. of carbon dioxide per ream of paper.
-
Use Powdered Detergents. Switch from liquid detergents to powders. Laundry liquids are mostly water (approx. 80%). It costs energy and packaging to bring this water to the consumer.
-
Save a Tree, or Two or Three. If every household in the U.S. replaced one box of 85 sheet virgin fiber facial tissues with 100% recycled ones, we could save: 87,700 trees, 226,500 cubic feet of landfill space ( equal to 330 full garbage trucks), 31 million gallons of water (Annual supply for 240 families of four), and avoid 5,300 pounds of pollution! Buy only recycled paper products for your office, bathroom and kitchen.
-
Change Your Light Bulbs. Replace 3 frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. This will save approximately 300 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $60 per year
-
6 Muscle Mow Your Lawn. Mowing for an hour with a gasoline- powered lawn mower can produce as much air pollution as a 350-mile drive in a car. Consider this alternative which emits nothing other than clippings and burns calories too.
-
Change Your Thermostat. Conserve fuel by turning down the heat at night and while you are away from your home. Setting the air conditioning thermostat in your home to 76 degrees in the summer will dramatically reduce your electricity bill and you'll do your bit to save energy and the environment.
-
Reduce Garbage. Buy products with less packaging and recycle paper, plastic and glass. You can save around 1,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year by reducing, reusing, and recycling.
-
Fill Your Dishwasher. Run your dishwasher only with a full load. Save approximately 100 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $40 per year. And… if you have this feature…set it to eco-mode to save even more energy and water.
