Waste Management
These Living Green "Q-Tips" Brought to you by Q105.
  • You may have heard this, but your conventional water heater is a huge energy waster. By adding a pre-cut installation jacket with an R-8 or higher rating you can reduce the heat loss from your tank and save money too. You can get the jackets from the hardware store or from the utility company. If everyone insulated their water heater it would save U.S. citizens 1 billion dollars in energey every year!
  • Do you set the cruise control on you car a little higher than the speed limit? Most of us do. Well, back it down from 80 to 65 and save gas. If just one driver travelling between Tampa and Ft. Myers for a year set his/her cruise control at 65 instead of 80 it would save 2 and a half barrels or crude oil. Enough gas to drive coast to coast.
  • Like the way your car looks when it's shiny and clean? Well instead of washing your ride with a hose and bucket, use a commercial car wash. Car washes are required by law to treat wastewater and are equipped with water-saving technologies. The savings are enormous! If everyone used a commercial car wash the next time their car is dirty it would save more than 4 billion gallons.
  • Remember when they told us the computer age would usher in paper-less society. Well we're printing more than ever before and we throw away 20% of everything we print, the same day! What a waste. If we just previewed our documents carefully, we could collectively save 2.4 million trees. More than 90 times the number of trees in Central Park!
  • Your electric dryer is an energy hog. In fact, about 6% of your utility bill comes right from the clothes dyrer. Think about line drying, or laying clothes flat to dry, isntead. If we dried our clothes the natural way we'd save about 66 billion kilowatt hours nationwide. Enough energy to power the University of Florida campus in Gainesville for 200 years!
